Springtime means king mackerel in the near-shore and offshore waters around the Gulf Coast. Tampa Bay sees massive schools of baitfish and predators move in during the spring months. Kingfish, cobia, tuna, sharks, and others are on the prowl for a meal. We loaded the Sportsman up with gear and headed out of Saint Petersburg in search of some high speed toothy fish. We ended up catching a fat blackfin tuna, which was a huge surprise in 50 feet of water!
Our favorite method of fishing this time of year is to slow troll live baits such as pilchards / scaled sardines , threadfin herring, or even small spanish mackerel behind the boat. Using the wind to push us, and bumping the boat in and out of gear, we drift across the egmont shipping channel from buoy to buoy and work around until we locate king mackerel or tuna. Sometimes you get both.
